Saying no to people can be an awkward thing. If you just say “no”, you could be mistakenly misinterpreted depending on your tone. However, if you learn other ways to say no, you can do it very politely and friendly.

Saying no or rejecting an idea can be really uncomfortable, especially when you are actively trying no to offend the other person. Also, it can be quite boring if you don’t know how to express “no” in different forms. Take a look at the list below to give you plenty of great ideas that will make rejecting much easier:

How to say ‘no’ neutral ways

These examples are great for when you are with your friends or with your boss! They are polite and easy to remember.

I’m sorry, it’s not for me
Thanks for that, but I think it’s a no this time
You know what, not this time
Thanks for thinking of me, but that’s not necessary
I really appreciate that, but I’m good
Next time, promise!

Formal ways

These formal ways are excellent to use to be extremely polite and friendly while still rejecting an idea. Make sure to practice these ones the most!

My apologies, I won’t be able to

I’d love to, but I can’t

I have another commitment

I’m afraid I can’t

Maybe another time

Sadly, I have something else

It’s not a good time

I wish I could make it work

Casual ways

The following list would be best used in front of good friends or any other person you know well.

Nah

Nope

No way

Sorry

I think I’ll pass

If only I could!

Can’t fit it in

Won’t be able to

I’m slammed (being ‘slammed’ means that you are extremely busy)

Now what?

Time to practice! A great way to practice this is to do it with a friend or colleague. If you don’t have anyone around, then practice in front of a mirror, but make sure you are practicing out loud! Find a few that you like the most and then when you have the chance, use them!

Good luck!

All of these ways to introduce yourself are extremely friendly and show lots of personality. Showing personality the first time you meet someone encourages a great first-impression, which can be essential when you are applying for a job, networking, or meeting new people. Practice these in the mirror until you feel confident to use them in real life!

Now it’s time to practice your new introductions! Be sure to practice in the mirror a few times and choose the few that are your favorites! Also make sure you add a smile in there, too!

Good luck!

If you’re trying to figure out how to say “I don’t know” but in more creative ways, take a look at these examples.

When you are learning English, it’s easy to only use the phrases that you know well but sometimes you forget to explore the other kinds of ways you can say the same phrase. Knowing the different ways you can say “I don’t know” will quickly improve the way you speak and sound fluently.

Take a look at these examples. Some are appropriate for certain situations so pay attention to how they are used:

Casual ways – Most of these way are very sarcastic and should not be used in formal settings

I haven’t got a clue

I haven’t the faintest idea

How should I know?

Don’t ask me

Search me….

Who knows?

It’s anyone’s guess…

It beats me

Neutral way – These can be used in any situation

I’m not sure

I have no idea

Your guess is as good as mine…

Formal ways – These examples are great in a workplace, with people you don’t know, when you are being polite

I’m sorry, I truly don’t know

Sorry! I’m not sure, but I could find out

So, now what?

Now it’s time to practice what you have learned! Create different situations where you would have to use these phrases and make sure to make examples for casual, neutral and formal ways.

Good luck!

‘You’re welcome’ is a very common reflexive response when someone says thank you to you. It’s easy to sound repetitive if you say it often. In English, there are many more ways to say ‘you’re welcome’ that can develop your language skills.

Don’t mention it…

No worries…

My pleasure…

I’m happy to help…

You got it…

There’s a well-known phrase in English that says, “diversity is the spice of life.”

It means for something to be exciting; they need to be innovative, diverse, and regularly changing.

Duplicating the same phrases and expressions, again and again, can look boring. It looks like a robot!

So, when someone thanks you for assisting them, what do you habitually say?

Is it “you’re welcome?”

I’m sure that more often you use the same reply. It’s sometimes an automated acknowledgment. At the same time, there’s nothing awkward with that.

In this post, we’re going to talk all about how to say “you’re welcome” suitably, as well as many expressions you can use to spice up your English dictionary!

As you know, English is a very pleasant language with manners and customs.

This is a type of polite behavior known as “etiquette.” It’s essential to use when communicating with other speakers.

So when precisely do people say you’re welcome?

Replying to “Thank You”

In its most naive form, “you’re welcome.”

For example:

David: “Hey, can I use your laptop?”

Jack: “Of course!”

David: “thank you.”

Jack: “You’re welcome!”

Invite Someone to Do Something

“You’re welcome” can also be practiced as a polite request. It’s a great way to invite somebody without a sense of social influence.

It’s also a very common sentence to hear when you’re at a friend’s house, and you weren’t planning for dinner, they’d like to invite you to stay for a meal.

For example:

“You’re welcome to wait for the feast if you’d like!”

Bragging About Something You Did

Sometimes it’s not unusual to hear people use “you’re welcome” when they’re bragging about an accomplishment.

Take a look at another example below:

John: “Wow, this dinner looks amazing!”

Susan: “You’re welcome!”

It’s also important to mix things up based on the condition, as you might be required to change your tone and word choice.

For example:

The level of formality in the situation (are you with friends and family, strangers, or at the job?)

The size of the assignment or service that you performed

Your association with the individual

The country that you’re in

Here we’re looking at different ways to say you’re welcome both in formal and informal ways.

How to Say “You’re Welcome” in Formal Situations

My pleasure

I’m happy to help

I’m glad to help

I’m happy to be of assistance

Happy to be of service

I’m sure you’d do the same for me

How to Say “You’re Welcome” in Informal Situations

It was nothing

No problem

It’s no trouble

Anytime

Sure

Sure thing

No worries

Don’t worry about it

Don’t mention it

No big deal

You might notice that these are very short and possibly more generally used in everyday communications such as assisting somebody on the street, lending something to a friend, and other daily intercommunications.

Are you feeling sure about how to say “you’re welcome” properly now?

If you imagine any other means to say you’re welcome, then make a list and add it to your daily conversation.

So, now what should you do?

So what are you waiting for? Test yourself to practice some of these phrases more than “you’re welcome” to add variety to your English! You’ll be saying more native in no time.

You’re welcome!

Have you ever been in a situation where someone asks you how you are and you have no idea how to respond to it? Or maybe you say “I’m fine” because that is what you know but maybe you want to express that you are more than “fine”? How can you do that without sounding too extreme or too dull? Check out these examples below!

If you are greeted then return the greetings more warmly. If you are favored, then repay the obligation manifold; but he who takes the initiative will always excel in merit.

-Ali ibn Abi Talib

I have always wondered why all ESL institutions and many English teachers focus on using ” I’m fine” as a response to “How are you?” because in many ways, it sounds dull and to some native speakers, “I’m fine” could come across as you are not having a great day. It’s not a terrible response because you can in truth be having a “fine” day. But what if you wanted to express yourself more in casual ways? Or what about in formal ways? Take a look below at other ways you can respond in a greeting!

How to respond to strangers

When would you respond to strangers? Likely when you go to the bank, talk to a cashier at the grocery store, the waiter at a restaurant, and more! Likely anybody who is serving you in public, or maybe just a kind stranger on the side walk, whatever the case may be, there are some great ways to respond to them in a light and friendly way. Try these out!

Doing great, thanks!

Not too bad, thank you, and you?

Pretty good! Thanks!

Notice how they are all light-hearted, polite, and sweet! Saying “thanks!” shows lots of respect and you would make a strong first impression on those around you. Try these out the next time you are out running errands.

How to respond to friends and family

Of course in any language, you and your close friends would have a different tone and you are likely to be much more honest. So in this case, if you’re truly have a “fine” day, there’s nothing wrong with saying “I’m fine”, however! There are still more ways to express yourself naturally and honestly to those you are close to.

I’m amazing today! This one is clearly very expressive and is very appropriate if you are have a really good day.

Meh, I’m okay Saying “meh” is a verbal expressive gesture and is common to use if you are having a bad day. Saying “I’m okay” implies that you are not having the best day.

I’m having a bleh day This has the exact same meaning as “Meh, I’m okay”. “Bleh” is also a verbal expressive gesture.

So good!

Doing alright!

Couldn’t be better! This can be used in two ways: 1. You are actually having a great day, 2. You say it sarcastically meaning that you are not really have a good day.

Same old, same old Using this expression is very common for the older generation in North America. The idea is that everything, as before, is the same in your life since the last time you saw that person.

How to respond in formal settings

When you are in a formal situation and you need to make a strong impression, being polite and the key. So you should always ask the other person how they are, too. It is okay to say “I’m fine” here if you follow up with “and you?”. But there are still more ways to respond:

I’m doing good, thank you, and you?

Great, thank you, and you?

Not too bad, thank you, and you?

Just fine, thank you, and you?

Now what?

Now I encourage you to try these out! If you have a favorite, try to use it as much as you can until you try your next favorite. This way, you will build your internal memory slowly (you don’t want to blank before you have the chance to respond to their question!)

Tell us which one is your favorite, and why! Which one surprised you?

Until next time,

Conclusion

As you can see, there are so many different ways to express your thankfulness to someone in both casual and formal settings. I encourage you to try one that you have never heard before and say it to someone! You should also try to make your own sentences with a few of them to practice muscle memory.
